My grandfather was a master tailor — and the biggest inspiration behind STI:L.
Whenever I visited him, I was fascinated by the way he carried himself. His hair was always neatly combed, his clothes perfectly pressed. Whether he was going to work or simply staying at home, he showed up with the same care and self-respect every day.
He learned the art of British tailoring and created garments made to last a lifetime. Quality wasn't a feature of his work — it was the foundation of it. His sense of style — in German Stil, or [Stiːl] in phonetic spelling — is where this label takes its name.
Only years later did I realize that my grandparents had lived through hardship I never noticed as a child. My grandfather had experienced war, loss and struggle. Yet he remained the most entertaining person I knew: sensitive and empathetic, witty and eloquent, humble and grateful.
He taught me that self-respect isn't something you earn. It's something you practice.
STI:L was created in honour of that mindset. The words on our garments are a reminder of the positivity, confidence and self-appreciation he passed on to me.
